Growing up, this was never something that crossed my mind. I trusted the police. I knew that when something was wrong, you were supposed to call them and they would help you. I, being a white female, grew up in a town nicknamed "White Islip". It's 98.6% white. I graduated with with 450 white, Catholic, Italian or Irish kids. I'm pretty sure we had one Asian kid and one guy who had a black dad and white mom and a few half-Jews. But that was about it.

We lived a very sheltered life. I remember sitting in Mr. Chizik's world history class. He was the first person to ever tell us that our lives were the exception, not the rule. We were shocked to learn that Catholicism was not the number one religion in the country. He also told us that unless we inherited our homes from our parents, there was a pretty slim chance we'd be able to afford to buy a house in that town one day.

All of my thoughts changed when I moved to Washington, DC to go to American University. I know the exact moment that I got it. Sophomore year I was getting ready with my girlfriends to go to party off campus. We texted our friend JB who was offering sober rides to the party. JB is probably the nicest sweetest guy you could possibly imagine. He'd do anything for you. JB also happens to be a big black guy. JB was studying criminal justice with intentions to go to law school. He took his academics very seriously and studied hard. He was the president of his (all white) fraternity and he was everybody's friend. But tonight, JB was just hanging out. He had on his slick flat brimmed hat and oversized shirt. He pulled up in his BMW to the front of our dorm while 6 girls stood there in our cute little outfits.

We knew he couldn't fit all of us at once, but jokingly, we opening the back door and started piling in laying flat on top of each other with our legs hanging outside the door. JB laughed and told us to get out and he'd make two trips. Just then, campus security came running up to the car yelling. JB immediately took the keys out of the ignition and put them on the dash. "That was weird", I thought. I said "Officer, relax, we were kidding." He told all of the girls to get out of the car and sit on the sidewalk in silence. "What the heck? We didn't do anything wrong!" JB looked at me to be quiet.

For the next fifteen minutes the officer berated JB about where he was going, why he had all of these girls in his car, and where he lived. He wanted to search the car. He asked for both JB's drivers license and his student ID. JB gave him all the information he needed and was overly polite, way nicer than I would have been. I was fuming because I thought it was totally ridiculous. JB said to the security officer, "Sir, what have we done wrong?" The officer said, "You can't drive with that many people in the car!" JB calmly replied, "Sir, that's a moving violation. We were parked with the doors still open. So again, I ask, what crime have I committed?" The officer said "Oh, we'll think of something."

Just then, he called backup to "deal" with our "situation". When backup arrived, a white guy driving an SUV pulled up right in front of us. They opened the back hatch to the car and about 9 sorority girls jumped in. JB said "Sir, aren't you going to do anything about that?" The officer replied "Oh, we have our hands full with you right now!" JB asked for the officers badge number. He said "That's none of your business!" JB replied "Actually sir, I'm studying criminal justice and interning with the Justice Department. I know what my rights are and you have to provide me with your badge number."

Eventually the campus security officer let us go and let JB take four of us. All four white girls sitting in that car were silent. We all knew why that happened. None of us had ever seen that happen before. We didn't know what to do or what to say. Do we apologize to JB? Do we ask if he's OK? Do we ask if this has happened before? I felt like crying. I had lived my whole life with a privilege I never knew I had until that moment. JB broke the silence. He said, "Girls, it's ok. Go have fun at the party. I'm going to drop you off and I'm going to go back there and file a report with the head of public safety." We begged him to let us go with him, but he wanted to go alone.

I think about that day a lot. It has given me a new perspective on my own white privilege. I joke about how I've been pulled over 8 or 9 times and I've only received 2 tickets, but I know I'm the exception, not the rule. You can see thousands of examples of this if you follow #CrimingWhileWhite on Twitter. I don't think things can change until each of us "gets it".Mama Coreyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06793333920915036437noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4333888694183090568.post-67044399208260285122012-07-10T12:28:00.000-07:002012-07-10T20:04:55.354-07:0010 Commandments of WomanhoodI haven't used my blog since I was Miss DC, but I needed some place to post my thoughts on this.

Today I read this article http://www.boobsbaconbourbon.com/2012/07/10/10-commandments-of-manhood/ and it made me think of the things that women sometimes forget that we should do. In a world where women are constantly trying to be equal to men, we sometimes forget the art of being a lady. Here is my list of the 10 commandments of womanhood:

1. A woman shall know how to cook one solid meal and all of its sides for a dinner party. At some point, you will have to cook for guests at your house. Have one great meal that you can cook. Don’t ever order in and don’t throw some pasta in a bowl and put out a jar of cold Ragu with a spoon in it. (If you don’t have one, check out my mom’s blog at www.mamacoreyskitchen.blogspot.com)

2. A woman shall know how to properly host a dinner party. Having a dinner party is not the same as having people over to pregame. Much more thought needs to go into it. Your dishes should match, you should have candles or some sort of centerpiece, and you should dress appropriately.

3. A woman shall not wear flip flops outside of the beach or immediately after a pedicure. No excuses. Flip flops are not cute and make you walk weird.

4. A woman shall not speak in a passive aggressive, overly generalized, non-descript complaints on facebook statuses. “SOME people need to realize that when they talk behind other’s backs it will get back to them”… You sound crazy. Stop it. If someone has pissed you off either confront them or ignore it. Don’t try to get attention from everyone to make them feel bad for you.

5. A woman shall own a nice pair of quality high heels in both black and brown and know how to walk in them. I train girls in pageant walking and posing. A girl once called me to teach her to walk. When I got there, I realized she meant literally walk in heels. She had never worn them before. YOU MUST LEARN!

6. A woman shall own one LBD. A nice LBD can go a long way. One mistake I’ve made is that I like loud prints and colors. But if I wear a bright hot pink dress and post 900 pictures on facebook, I can’t wear that dress again for a long time. No one will remember that you just wore that LBD so you’ll get your money’s worth.

7. A woman shall know how to jump her car and at least fake other automobile knowledge. There is no reason to not know how to jump your car. Google it. Then find someone who knows and have them point out where your battery is, if you don’t know. You should never be in a position that you’re stranded and you have to rely on some random guy to “help” you. You don’t know who he is. Same thing goes for when you go get your car fixed. Don’t play dumb. You’ll get taken advantage of. Pretend like you used to fix cars with your dad on the weekends.

8. A woman shall never play dumb to get a guy to like her. On the topic of playing dumb, don’t ever play the dumb girl to get guys to like you. Exceptions- if there is a situation that you’re going to get something awesome out of it, do it. I once didn’t have enough cash to get my car out of a garage and didn’t feel like finding an ATM so I pretended to be dumb and didn’t know what the price was. If you’re dumb enough to just let me go without paying and I’m smart enough to work what I got, that’s all on you.

9. A woman shall have opinions on current events. Every woman should know what is going on in the world and have an opinion on it. People generally don’t care if you agree with them or not, but they’ll be impressed that you have something to say about it.

10. A woman shall always be a lady, but stick up for yourselves! Women should always remember proper etiquette, poise, and grace, but that doesn’t mean you have to be quiet. Speak up!Mama Coreyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06793333920915036437noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4333888694183090568.post-82280460390623122152010-02-24T21:24:00.000-08:002010-02-24T21:32:57.602-08:00...and then I sang for Haiti.I have your weekend plans ready for you. I am in full swing getting prepared to leave for Miss America! I am so excited and so honored to show you all how hard I have been working and how prepared I am to be the next Miss America.

Part of my preparation is to raise funds for the Children's Miracle Network. This is a nonprofit organization that helps raise money for children's hospitals all over the country, including the Children's National Medical Center here in DC.

My goal is to raise $10,000 by Miss America. If everyone could donate just $10, I could reach my goal very quickly and we can really make a difference in the life of a child. Thank you so much for your continued support on my journey to Miss America!

To donate please click here.
Thank you!

Love,
JenMama Coreyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06793333920915036437noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4333888694183090568.post-53113034987161820732009-11-20T21:02:00.000-08:002009-11-30T17:16:19.955-08:00...and then I got too busy to post?<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 268px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYsCy0Rh_vvi9AVUa3K4Tc0xTt6Kx3qTKNFcC_ynt7HdgdPYZvST0IkVvNyOw2zFLSgddiwkbDz8Xt_Zdpy52lWzyjH_OXZkdBa5Z1PftoObRRtfILuLQuTLLtYYmB2gp7751ylKG0z2c/s400/13348_193163414415_609659415_3936838_1166432_n.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5406418164341053282" />

So I’ve been slacking on the posts. But I can promise you, I have NOT been slacking on life. Miss DC has kept me busy this past month and now I am in full swing preparing for Miss America!

After meeting Obama, not much else can compare, but here are some appearance highlights:

MEXICO: Not an appearance, but I did get to sneak away for a few days down to Monterrey, Mexico to visit some good friends. This only motivated me more to spend some time in a foreign country to learn Spanish. I took Spanish in school, but never seriously studied it. Every person I met there spoke at least Spanish and English and all very well! I want that! Hmmmm …. Can I use my Miss DC scholarship money abroad??
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjd3API88uyA4LuJj4a2_wu309dheW6n5OEyoUmCbXhLBlHuoLYCOj4TnXUPfAN2ZinZOJCpSpVzmH5BdmH5Qqi5l8SLpLUWmC3CIGwxk6EL_tQHBZ_6yamTfKPuGNynR11VYxjDGcvgtU/s400/DSC00990.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5406418403015673282" />

CAPS/RANGERS: On October 8th, I was invited to sing the National Anthem at the Caps/Rangers game. This had to be one of my favorite singing experiences. Growing up in NY, my dad raised us to be diehard Ranger fans. He is a 27-year season ticket holder and when I was growing up you could find little 7-year old me sitting on the couch with my daddy on game night in my Ranger jersey screaming at the TV. He taught me that hockey is hands down the best sport ever. One of my favorite sports memories was getting to go to Mark Messier’s retirement game. He is my all-time favorite athlete. Now that I’m in DC, I can get my hockey fix with the Capitals, who happen to be awesome. I love going to games and cheering on my home team. So it was such a thrill to have the Rangers here in DC and being allowed to sing for them. While I did root for my Caps, my mom sat next to me cheering for the Rangers so I think we evened it out. ;) Just don’t tell my dad I’m a Caps fan. hehe
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6LWrq1e1UD4ayfsBBrZZCLXAbnQ36Vvja08DJNZTD2i2vSQIpgivY_kZXZIE7H0ebBWNsH_3FF6bv81-YkVJHWlNax2JKNt-2ezLmSPSqk_roY-9pGRXncK1F6lOSDXRaEfY22XVQy80/s400/8123_182816725411_593035411_4248267_2143399_n.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5406419156770996626" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEie9eC289bLCeHsbpzRDfTBgm_ZrwRVoHOenOYJQBG9U39wMu4hF4QdHMqSURakCzNlxlloz5GwK0BArANPMc_aMIR6HzClaRRz82ld-6Gqb0noP1OBvO2BpU-lIdXksmkh5N_7cJneEgE/s400/8123_182816720411_593035411_4248266_3225239_n.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5406419154132614850" />

USMC MARATHON WEEKEND: Kicked off the weekend on Friday morning by singing the National Anthem at the Convention Center (at 8am!!!).
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWu9UtDIfEIEPITOXz6fCnxlX6YcOZfUh5ek_Nn8AzDucNsaUW5NBPoiKQIzpewts9DiovzjA6pahXeSTGx4e19PctRnhyphenhyphentg9EtldN0AVhMA1jF4BEecQNPqR0T9n3GDYjri6yoVWgm0I/s400/16735_196322400411_593035411_4377041_6327094_n.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5406419800822868802" />
That night I attended a banquet for the USMC Marathon and met some fun people like Montel Williams! I also got my first coin! I didn’t know what it meant, but after receiving 3 that weekend, I now understand what an honor it is to receive one. Saturday morning was the Healthy Kids Fun Run. I think they said something like 4000 kids came through to run their one-mile race. Even though it was cold and raining, not a single kid seemed to notice. I had a great time taking pictures with the kids at the CNN booth and high-fiving every single kid as they crossed the finish line (even though I desperately craved hand sanitizer after high-fiving 4000 kids… haha) That night I was asked to sing at American University’s Alumni Dinner where they announced that the school will be holding a Miss America viewing party for the students! I never went to bed that night because I thought it was a good idea to spend some time with my friends and I had to be at the real Marine Corp Marathon at 5 am. Oops. Luckily my mom was in town to get me down there! The marathon was an unbelievable sight. It took them 21 minutes to just cross the starting line! I got to see my friend, Andy Baldwin from The Bachelor, before the race, but couldn’t find my bff/pretend boyfriend Jon-Michael Eclar. There were THOUSANDS of people just in the race, let alone all the supporters there cheering each other on. What an amazing thing to experience. Miss DC 2008, Kate Marie Grinold, was there too running the 10K. She inspired me to want to do it next year! Who’s with me!?
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmp9Qjj7owoMf8-n3wmPzSOUE-DBPOJsgFXymSiOoiAC2MbiJgbQ2svt3Ohuw9kGmx4V-QrYlAK1U4-abdiWZLEBSyIrjVPqMTuXIYK_x3S-RL1W2I3M0-Y1fYzQAJlQbBzktdVh50SGU/s400/16735_196322415411_593035411_4377044_4828944_n.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5406419805897393602" />

MISS AMERICA COMES TO DC: Later that same day as the marathon, Miss America, Katie Stam, arrived in DC for a fabulous fundraiser we were hosting at the Embassy of Uzbekistan. We both got to spend some time with the Ambassador of Uzbekistan along with his wife and we got a tour of their BEAUTIFUL embassy. The embassy was the former Canadian Embassy and was designed by an architect that died on the Titanic! Katie and I had a great time taking pictures and performing for everyone there. And believe me, we took A LOT of pictures.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfIYT41ZpgMXOOo14JqYDiMUHmpWx3dkLt5Yso5GXk9nKOYfWqczk0K5r516KQo-mReKxl7foZPpwlegyIiMXkhZg7NyO_gQ3ljLoK3FmWXHhllzty2H37o_3Qr4LMngiOKRgXutAY-CY/s400/16735_196322585411_593035411_4377072_4067348_n.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5406420657125930738" />

LESLIE SANCHEZ: At the Miss America party, Leslie Sanchez approached me to ask if I would speak at her book release party that was later that week. Her book, We’ve Come a Long Way, Maybe, was just released and she’s been all over CNN and Fox and even The District Dish! (www.thedistrictdish.com) Her party was held at our fabulous friend Don Patron’s apartment at the Ritz. (I want to live at the Ritz) I love this man so much. He even thought ahead enough to hide cupcakes in his walk-in closet so I could go hide and eat a cupcake without every reporter capturing a picture of me chowing down on a chocolate cupcake! LOVE HIM. I also love Leslie. She is such an inspiration to women of all ages. I look to her to gain inspiration on how to carry myself, especially in the public eye. It is hard to balance the idea of coming across as a strong and powerful independent woman, and coming across as a b*tch. When Leslie walks into a room, you can tell she’s somebody… and that she is just filled with self-confidence. But never once does she make those around her feel that they are less than her. She inspires all to seek their inner confidence and let is shineee. I love that.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 276px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFcvmIl_M3jQpH1TZKvBPAGdOiDj5ZFAacIH5GLBiiPSgjSOFoVF30EwNhCB3l6C5pXyES1-xd6bc6zlABQCvvc-15GTrzzg2Zq8l-4SYC7Ahmcm5-zcjl0h4ZU06KFdJUYrfHbJIwoDs/s400/12637_1239404098930_1044092078_30745070_5753534_n.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5406420931590995218" />

CMN TORCH WALK: On October 30th, I had the opportunity to work with my favorite organization, Children’s Miracle Network, and participate in their Torch Relay Walk. My dad flew down for the weekend and we drove out to James Madison to visit my sister who is a junior there. We spent the weekend catching up, family tailgating, going to my first college football game (thanks AU), and hiking the Appalachian Trail! 6.5 miles. Up hill. Both ways. I thought I was in good shape. But I was dead! Luckily dad treated us to McDonald’s fries and shakes after our 5-hour hike. Of course I never got there because DC decided it was totally a good idea to shut down the Key Bridge, Chain Bridge and ALL exits to get out of the city on the south side. Good one DC. But can't say I'm shocked. Since we were trapped in the city, mom and I did some shopping for my apartment. Thank God for mommy. I'd still be living out of boxes and sleeping on my mattress with no sheets if she didn't come. :) thanks mommy!

**Let's keep in mind while reading this that I work a full time job and every second that I wasn't at these appearances I was at work for the opera. I didn't go home for days and was changing in bathrooms/my car/at Teri's. Also- many of these mornings I met my trainer at 6 or 7am before the day started ***

Monday:
At work we had an All Staff meeting with Placido Domingo (our Exec Director) who is back from Europe. I know he really won't be able to come, but if he did I think I might die.

Tuesday:
Sneaker Ball and Mimi, Miss Puerto Rico, came to town!
The Sneaker Ball is a gala that honors all of the DC sports teams (Redskins, Nats, Caps, Mystics, DC United... etc.) So they were all there.

I was invited to sing the National Anthem and totally rocked it, if I don't say so myself. Obama spoke and it was like the time Claire and I went to the Inaugural Concert all over again.

I was just frozen in place and filled with so much emotion just watching him.

**Mimi and I watching Obama!**

After his speech people started gathering at the base of the stage to shake his hand. I took a look around and decided this was an appropriate time to use the fact that I was 6'5" in my crown and heels, blonde, and absolutely stuck out like a sore thumb at the Hispanic Gala, to meet Obama. I ran up to the stage (hiking my gown up to run) and snuck in behind a group of secret service who were making their way through the crowd to reach over and yell "President Obama!" He looked up and (since we're the same height) we made eye contact and he said "Ahh, Miss DC!" and came over and shook my hand. I attempted to take a picture of this situation of myself as this was happening, but instead got a 2 second video of the seconds after he shook my hand.

Teri and Michael wanted to go to the after party, but Mimi and I were so tired that we wanted to go to bed! haha.

Thursday:
Had a work meeting at Duke Ellington in the afternoon. Afterwards I met up with a friend for a quick drink and then walked back to Teri's to sleep for a few hours.

Friday:
After work I had to head down to the Riverside Center in Ward 7 for a work project. It's such a cool project. We recorded stories of community members of the ward who have lived, worked, and gone to school there. We then turned the stories over to local artists who created works of art based on the stories and it was going to be presented on Saturday. Friday was our dress rehearsal. The opera's project was we had people write music and lyrics and had a quartet perform the piece. So moving for the few people who came. We will be doing it again at THEARC on November 17th. Stay tuned for details. I was only 10 mins late. Not too bad. The ticket that was left for me was actually a ticket to sit in a box seat. During intermission and the lights came up I realized I was sitting behind SuperNanny! It also made me start thinking.... 3 years ago I had been in that theater in the very last row watching my very first opera thinking about how excited I was to be there. Now three years later, I'm working for the company, sitting in a box seat, seeing the production for the 3rd time in 2 weeks, and getting ready to go back stage after the performance to go out to dinner with one of the cast members. Oh how far I've come in 3 years.

Sunday:
Once again, woke up early. I was doing the make up taping with Goodwill, but this time at their South Dakota office. I met the most amazing people while I was there that Goodwill has changed their lives. I'm not going to tell their stories here because I'm hoping they will be included in the video project we're doing.

THEN I FINALLY GOT A BREAK! I went to Starbucks, ordered a Venti Pumpkin Spiced Latte (my fav) and sat. that's it. that's all I wanted to do. Then I also finally got to have some friend time with some of my very best friends that I've been neglecting. I have the best friends in the world. The understand the importance of the fact that sometimes I just want to sit in my football jersey, ripped jeans, flip flops, no makeup, have a beer, eat some pizza/wings/ice cream/whatever I shouldn't eat, laugh and most importantly... just be Jen.Mama Coreyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06793333920915036437noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4333888694183090568.post-5300410642743117012009-09-11T11:01:00.000-07:002009-09-12T21:33:50.530-07:00...and then my principal came over the speaker and told us what happend<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 358px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-J51j0Sns2dAcPkt3dKR8bb55RP9KrKuJQ8PaoqaG13gAhygBWBseRo7i5RmwuG7o9TLa34NPJSCWvtIqqbW3vZ7ZUSb_5373wazk-h8hSQPGHagYafEl6TvTH8TEliSCBNz8JfxuBJ0/s400/sisters.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5380271798676398114" />

When I was little my mom would always tell us that two terribly tragic things would inevitably happen to us: 1. We would experience a death of a friend in high school. 2. Something so big would happen in our lifetime that we would remember every single moment of where we were, whom we were with, and how we felt at the exact moment we heard the news. She always told us about her two friends in high school who accidentally died while sitting in their running car outside their house in the winter. And she always told us about the day John F. Kennedy died. While I always was interested in hearing my parent’s stories, I sort of brushed her warnings off as “that would never happen to me.”

Obviously, mom is always right. I did end up experiencing the loss of a friend in high school to suicide and one to a tragic accident. I also experienced the latter of my mom’s predictions.

On the morning of Tuesday, September 11, 2001 I was sitting in my 2nd period typing class in my freshman year attending a high school on Long Island, not too far from NYC. One of the students in our class said, “Did you hear that a plane just crashed into one of the twin towers?” I immediately pictured some small crop plane that crashed into the building causing very little damage to the building and more damage to the plane. I also remembered that a week or so earlier, a man had thought it was a good idea to parachute into NYC and got stuck on the Statue of Liberty. “What an idiot!” I thought. “How did some idiot in a little plane not see the twin towers!” Never in a million years would I have pictured what was actually going on. Just then our principal came on the loud speaker to announce the reality of what had just happened. Panic and silence came over our classroom. Many of the kids in my class had parents that worked in Manhattan and some that worked in the World Trade Center. It seemed like almost every person knew someone who could have been there. I remember walking to lunch with my friend, Amanda, as we tried to get in touch with her mom. Her father was supposed to be flying out of LaGuardia to LAX that day. We still hadn’t heard where the plane had come from and we were all holding our breath waiting to hear from our loved ones. Lunch was a blur. I just remember sitting there watching frantic mothers running through the cafeteria and halls trying to find their kids. I remember kids crying in the hallways and crying in class. I remember my best friend Danielle pulling me out of my Spanish class because she needed someone to talk to about her fears that a close family friend had not been heard from yet. I remember coming home to see the first clips of what was going on on TV and my frantic mother making phone calls to all of the Elementary School kids' parents since our district announced that no Elementary School child would be allowed to go home unless a parent could greet them at the bus stop. I remember driving over the Robert Moses Bridge and being able to see the cloud of smoke sitting over the island of Manhattan.

Every once in a while in a social situation the topic of 9/11 comes up and we all sit back and remember exactly where we were, who we were with, and most importantly, how it made us feel. For the first time in my life on that day I realized that I did not live in the little safety bubble that I thought I had been in my whole life. I realized that I should not take life for granted. I learned what it means to be proud to be an American. I saw for the first time the power of a community coming together. And most importantly, I learned that my mom is always right.

Thank you to all of our service men and women all over the world. My prayers are with you, with my friend Matt Reed who was just deployed to Iraq last week, with his girlfriend and my bff Rana who misses him terribly,
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 229px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSF5IImpuCQ45-FaIoIqUOOVzWgzPnWaGzkjHwKazuhBUFhPBo0-lMBObUnfkgAtrpiC8qcVQNgFI_iYBSBdbqDjZwarK1N2w10P8si24hoxYF4Vt6n2g6WFinI4fBuWk0Khngb_ze45o/s400/matt.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5380272233734977426" />
with the rest of the families whose sons, daughters, mothers, fathers, cousins, friends… all serve our country, and with all those who lost someone on 9/11. If you don't have anything to do, come over to Nats Park to see a FREE opera!!Mama Coreyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06793333920915036437noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4333888694183090568.post-63654409505845619582009-09-10T20:39:00.000-07:002009-09-10T21:28:28.083-07:00...and then I realized Miami is verrryyyy different from DC<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRfGlc50nhSAc9kkmjWAy38L95qq4ItGpHrbitmPtEZ876h6SyrLf0b4acrJwRhHUI0QGsealurKEdtkYjxo_eHRKqPrNItvbWeb9P15KHFD0C_GDCgh8wrvnU9fY98OV0aDkv0b0i8Ko/s400/8722_1135454631412_1378710232_30489494_2213871_n.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5380051772939366258" />

By some miracle, I did not have any events scheduled for Labor Day Weekend. Of course I realized this on the Monday before the weekend. I decided I wanted to go visit my little sister who just started her freshman year at the University of Miami. Checked for flights.... got totally screwed on the price since I waited too long... but it was absolutely worth it to get out of town and see my sister.

We had a cute little sister weekend filled with living back in the dorms with a bunch of freshmen girls, sleeping till 2, eating in the cafeteria, laying by the pool, and shopping. lots of shopping. I learned very quickly on our first night in South Beach that I was not in Kansas...err... DC anymore. The dress code in Miami is NOTHING like it is in DC. If people in DC wore some of the outfits out that these girls were all wearing people wouldn't know what to think! It wasn't Amanda's friends though... they were dressed nicely... but some of the girls that we saw out... I just don't think I could be that confident going out in an outfit like that. Thinking about it now, it makes sense. A majority of people my age in DC either work for the government or work for a company that works closely with the government. You can't exactly be seen out in Adams Morgan in a tube top bra and sequin mini skirt with 6in heels. Miiiiggght be awkward on the Hill the next day. I had so much fun exploring Miami with my sister and her friends. The city is just so beautiful. Why didn't I go to school there?

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFKw3t1K45VmZsEso6c3DiwsQhsIXicGtnVHI01g10iU9EfN1vkNTAdHBkeGrYYd4eABn53gW0biXT-wzQSF6n2EkNSDT79ooLCvhePljAUKtvo5oKLOSuD23tuaSA07hv6JZAGBiUdl0/s400/7728_1138812230243_1225500081_30688271_7733706_n.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5380055984213742626" />

But the one thing that really made me jealous about Miami is that sooooo many people spoke Spanish. Of course it was pouring rain the whole way there, so I wasn’t sure if it was really going to happen. After driving around for 30 minutes I figured out the whole valet parking situation, but of course had no idea what name our reservations were under. Wasn’t too big of a deal though… just flashed the crown and they let me leave my car right in front. ;)

Carla Brown some how managed to get us invited to the last parade of the summer, and also the one that the Commandant would be at himself! We attended a little cocktail party before the parade inside the commandant’s house. His wife greeted us at the door. She was the sweetest lady from the second we walked in. She even offered to let Sonya and I leave our bags (and crown box) in a sectioned off room. The house was beautiful! Just thinking about all of the American and DC history within that house was amazing. My favorite part of our tour was when we reached the top of the stairs and from a private room 3 little girls came running out when they heard I was there. We did a cute little photo op and I got to hear all about their princess sneakers and I told them to watch for me at Miss America. That is my favorite part of being Miss DC… seeing that expression on a little girl’s face when they see you up close.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRwnCT2WU7phKizSvYjxgYwgfLVeSH7s5IuX_1SEfl37c7mNJdo79KNMHOrkZmkvvkI0HjNOPAeuYtoXWcHtl1r0Q9r7VznP0KIzmGKcfT47BmRrlnBlMpQ-aWIBPPXURqT-X2spsPOcU/s400/DSCF0008.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5376889407348693410" />

I also had the opportunity to shake hands with a lot of powerful people and a lot of just awesomely interesting people. I even met a dog who is trained to help veterans who have been injured. I really love this organization.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4CjhpDykImUOIm3FvO13cjJBXeancN2GxMKXU0ou-GqyuDczE4ScTS6wYErjOznQ7QtYQuyjOlAa_ECiSBMP5NpKtK7yFilJHr5y1Gtvc1DE273VL77hLTZjNa7jD5Y1xHC8-zP6nFLQ/s400/DSCF0018.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5376893043317069410" />

The parade in general was probably one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen in DC. Everyone should go. Fav parts: 1. When the military band played “All That Jazz” 2. The trumpet guys on the roof 3. When Sonya, Carla, and I got the opportunity to scope out the boys as they marched right in front of our front row seats.

The night ended with Sonya and I trying very hard to get back into the house to get our bags, which seemed much harder than anticipated. No one seemed to know the "protocol" on that one, but we eventually found a very nice Marine to stand with me, while another one escorted Sonya inside to find our bags. I don’t think those Marines knew they were going to have to go on Mission: Locate Miss DC’s crown box in the Commandant’s house without getting in trouble. But a picture of my new bffs (Miss Virgin Islands and Miss Puerto Rico) from my trip to orlando.

Moving is not something I wish upon anyone. That said, I’m not sure what I was thinking when I decided it was a good idea to completely pack and move from somewhere I’ve lived for over 2 years in less than 24 hours. On top of that, I thought it was a good idea to say yes to an appearance that was to start downtown exactly one hour after I was scheduled to drop off my u-haul. How exactly was I planning on doing this? Welcome to being Miss DC. You can get dressed in 15 minutes… a sequin evening gown, hair, makeup, heels, bag, crown, sash…. Uh oh… I had left my crown and sash in my car, which was parked at my old apartment. The bigger problem? I couldn’t find which bag I threw my car keys into. No biggie, I’ll call Onstar on my way there and have them unlock it. Next problem? I can NEVER find a cab when I’m in a rush. I called for a cab at 7:15 knowing I had to be there at 7:30 AND I had to stop clear across town to get my crown and sash. No biggie… knew they would start late. I was preparing to make a fierce entrance at Miss Gay DC wearing my competition Miss DC evening gown. I knew they’d love it.

So there I am, standing outside my new apartment where no one knows me or why it is completely normal to see me standing on the side of the road in a sequin evening gown. The woman had told me 5 minutes for the cab. I stood outside for 45 minutes in the heat… and heels… waiting. I called twice, got some nasty woman who told me I had NOT called 30 minutes earlier, when I did. And then I had to bust it out… “Do you understand what I look like right now!? I am Miss District of Columbia and I am trying to get my crown and sash to get to an event and you have left me standing on the side of a road in a designer sequin evening gown.” I didn’t want to… but I felt it was necessary after 45 minutes of waiting. They immediately changed their tone and sent me a new cab, which got there 5 minutes later. By the time he arrived I was already tearing up because it was 8:00 and I was totally stressed out. There would be no time to get my crown or sash so I went straight there.

In the end, it really didn’t matter. I had a fab time at Miss Gay DC. Probably the most fun event I’ve been to. All the men (and queens) gave me the most sincere compliments, the best being all of the genuine “thank you’s” for being there to support their pageant and their lifestyles. They even called me up on stage twice! The first to show off my gown, which one of the hosts wanted to buy off me, and the second, to help Miss Gay America crown the new Miss Gay DC 2009, NAME. The entire show was completely entertaining and those girls are so talented!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 210px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9Av4br6gf0z8t76fvHTz9jIsQWKwc8podh7GGXy5c0_kVE8tlZksdcGX8LaMjC9WSnoT631EhOCYVC6B22L_dl8EiSEZJ62BMRbGUkufSAdTyaWgizFP3LoVUDVBbN1-k2GoVDei_rvE/s400/MissGayDC.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5373217645883586482" />

After the pageant it was back to unloading the car…. I drove there Friday afternoon (big mistake), stopped in Manhattan to pick up Claire, and got to the house around 1 am. The next morning, I had to be up at 7 am to get ready because Greg Sleter from the West Islip Tribune was coming by to take some family shots with my crown while I was home.

After that little photo op, my mom, dad, uncle bob, claire and I all went down to Winters Brothers Garbage and Recycling company to do some fabulous shots with a green evening gown and some sweet garbage trucks for my "Let's Talk Trash" platform. Let me just tell you, that Claire Buffie is one talented girl. I'm pretty sure this was her first photoshoot dealing with evening gowns and garbage trucks, but you would have never known. That girl was directing the garbage trucks and hanging off a ladder trying to get the best shot. We love her.

We then came back and ate three slices of the best pizza around--> Albert's This was my parents favorite pizza growing up too. Nothing beats a good Long Island pizza.

Then it was onto photoshoot number too. Claire ghetto-rigged a backdrop in my parents bathroom and we got to work. I knew when it was a good picture because Claire would yell out "yessssssss!!!!" every time. I can't wait to see these shots!

I ran up to Connecticut to visit my friends Alyssa and Mike for their housewarming party. So much fun and their apartment is so sweet. I can't wait to move into my new apartment and decorate it. I must have been day dreaming about that when I got in my car to drive the 2 hours back to Long Island because instead of putting in my parents address, I somehow put in my DC address and hit the road. It wasn't until I was on the George Washington Bridge that I realized what I had done. I got off somewhere in the ghetto of the Bronx where the first thing I saw was a very large man carrying a very large snake next to my car. My GPS, of course, lost signal all of a sudden and I was just aimlessly wandering around trying to get back onto a main road. I eventually made it home about 2 hours later. ugh.

Then today I was sitting nicely on the couch helping my sister when my mom started screaming and dove at our 7 month old golden retriever. He had somehow gotten a hold of my iphone and had broken the glass into very small sharp pieces. After I cried a little, we rushed over to the apple store and got me a new one! I can't live without my iphone! Let's just hope I backed it up recently.... eek!Mama Coreyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06793333920915036437noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4333888694183090568.post-31401506164416500202009-08-01T10:26:00.000-07:002009-08-02T07:53:31.404-07:00...and I was just crowned Miss District of Columbia 2009!!!

Two years ago I competed in my first pageant, Miss D.C. 2007. Going into it having absolutely no idea what I was doing, and receiving 2nd Runner Up, made me realize that this was something I could actually succeed in! So I took the next year to step back and learn what I needed to in order to be competitive and successful in this organization. I came back to Miss DC 2008 with more confidence and thought I was ready. And I got close. But in hindsight, I realize that I really needed to grow and experience everything that I have in the past year. As Miss DC Sweetheart, I took advantage of every opportunity to be an active titleholder and therefore prepare myself to be Miss DC this year. This gave me the confidence that I was capable of the job of Miss DC and the second the crown hit my head, I knew I could hit the ground running.

In the weeks prior to Miss DC 2009, I was nervous and scattered among everything between preparation, my job, and more. I was receiving so much encouragement and advice from friends, family and coworkers, but to a point that I was overwhelmed and felt as though the true “me” was getting a bit clouded or lost. My roommate who was Miss Maryland Teen USA 05 sat me down and gave me a reality check. She empathized with me, sharing that the same thing happened to her entering nationals. She emphasized the importance of going into the interview room and on that stage as ME – just Jen. Once the week came, I felt an all over calming feeling. I was ready.

And that’s about all I’ve got until I was crowned because the actual pageant felt like a complete blur. The afterparty was pretty baller. My grandfather took everyone across the street from the Lincoln Theatre to Ulah Bistro. Thank you to everyone who came and celebrated with us!!

Obviously with an event as significant as this, I have some people to thank:

Miss DC Organization and volunteers, especially Teri, Tricia and Sonya: You have encouraged me to come back each year, and I’m here because of that. I finally did it! Thank you.

Former Miss DC’s: For offering your advice and making yourselves available to me in this next year.

My family: For putting up with my ridiculousness and for not telling me to sit down and shut up when I wanted to stand on tables in restaurants and sing.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjd3Kw2gssjKooChHY95dDMvUqhpWO5MB_lLdv8qRT4-F7O_-lgtC50WkAcllSNtvI6Wi6zGfFa6JG1r5fOYbHMzZJznrolhGr6a89yifYqyZeFhT1dnKBchhGbyE3wA1tyu4xiH-pmJpI/s400/5290_578402509599_2808128_34379274_4770404_n.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5365050777013739330" />

Poppy: I don’t even know what to say to you. We all started as competitors, but became fast and wonderful friends, who are unconditionally supportive of each other in our quest towards the same goal.
